- How do I extract my old shower drain from the floor to replace with a new one?
I’m redoing my shower. I’ve gone right down to the shower pan. The new shower drain that I purchased does not have holes that line up with the old drain base, so I’m going to have to pull the old one out. It’s in there pretty tight, into the concrete slab. How do I get it out? Should I just let it remain and drill holes in the top part of the new shower drain so that it will fit? Or are drains that were place into the concrete just tight, such that I might have to chip and break it out to replace with a new one? Thanks to all plumbing experts! This is a concrete foundation home. Therefore, I can’t get under the house, there’s no wood framing to deal with. The drain sleeve is just right in the concrete.... - Plumbing Question on old Floor Drains?
I have a couple of old 5 diameter floor drains. They are sunken about 2 from the floor surface. I tried banging it around the edges with a screwdriver and hammer and prying through the grid. Any tricks to getting them up without busting them up? I need to run a snake down to get the drain working. Thanks....

I assume you have tried drain openers.
Get a helper, a garden hose and a big towel or old blanket. Aim the nozzle into the shower drain, wrap the towell around the nozzle and drain to block any water from coming back. While you hold this mass against the drain have your helper turn on the hose. Quite often the water pressure will push the obstruction out.
if ur pipes are metal u use snake cleaner heavy duity drain cleaner if it plastic i use draino or liquid plummer and take the top off to the drain and run a metal snake auger sold in your plumbing supplies isle in homedepot or hardwar store and then u slide it down the piple back and fourth. and try doing that in all the sinks and in the basemtnet too.
Open the overflow cover (it’s on inside of tub in new tubs is beside the tub on old ones) Lift the stopper mechanism unhook it. You now have a route to the stoppage. Take a toilet bowl auger ($25 in most shops) place it in the opening and it should take you about 30 seconds to pull out all the long hairs stopping your line. GO easy on the auger; don’t force it especially if you have plastic pipes. Be aware that when using an auger always turn in the same dirction even when you are working your way back so as not to lose the crud you’ve snared. I’ve done this a dozen times it always works. Ditto for shower stalls.
Good luck!!
How steep is your roof? Try going in from a vent stack with a snake. If the roof is not readily accessible, cut a hole in the wall opposite the shower faucet and access the trap. All showers should have an access panel. Go in from the trap with your snake. Cover the hole with a 1/4 piece of plywood.
